President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has appointed Heru Prasetyo to lead the Deforestation and Forest Degradation Plus project (REDD+), an agency tasked with curbing deforestation and improving the management of the country’s natural resources.
“This institution is aimed at making clearer the… use and ownership of forests,” Heru said in a statement issued by the agency on Friday. “Our hope is that Indonesia will be able to much better control the emissions from land use by establishing and applying a system that is capable of measuring and reporting on emissions in an accurate and verifiable way.”
Heru, currently deputy at the Presidential Work Unit for Development Monitoring and Control (UKP4), said that with improved reporting capabilities, Indonesia will be able to curb emissions and safeguarded its forests and peat soil.
