Nigeria: Felling Trees At the National Stadium

9 October 2013

Last week, the National Sports Commission (NSC) ordered the felling of some trees at the National Stadium in Lagos because they blocked the view of some close circuit television (CCTV) cameras. The NSC Liaison Officer, Mrs. Tayo Oreweme said she took the action based on the directive from her superiors in Abuja, who were advised to do so by the installation engineers.

We consider the action of the NSC authorities not only reprehensible but indeed a clear disservice to the nation. Cutting down trees that were planted in 1973 by the administration of the former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, based on some spurious grounds is unnerving, considering national and global efforts on the environment.
