ABOUT THE PRESENTATION

Financial Tools for a Warming World--the Role of Finance in Addressing Climate Change

The wide-ranging implications of climate change will require new thinking, new cooperating partners, new programs, and new approaches to many development programs - including those in the forest sector. Carbon markets clearly can play a key role in implementing these changes, but their success will depend in part on whether they are configured to attract private sector partners.  To explore this issue, USAID and the U.S. Forest Service are cosponsoring this presentation on the role of financing and carbon markets in efforts to mitigate global climate change.

Dean Liappas and John Battaglia of Evolution Markets, a carbon brokerage firm, will discuss the current status of the voluntary market in carbon credits from the private forest sector perspective.  They will discuss the opportunities and challenges in the market today, their experience with several specific projects, and how new national and international policies and agreements are expected to change the status quo.  They will also comment on the state of available financing for forest-based carbon trades, and will reflect on some of the financial interventions that donor institutions could consider to accelerate climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts in the forest sector.
